Social media ponderings.
I’ve been thinking about managing the social media accounts I run, and figured I’d put my thoughts here.
For those that don’t know, I run another site called Expedition Fiction. With it, there is a Twitch account, and I’ve got Twitter, Facebook and Youtube accounts for it. I love streaming, and the social media allows me to promote the work I do on the site and Twitch. The Youtube channel rarely is uploaded to, but it’s there.
What’s the problem?
The problem is that I have Twitter/Facebook/Youtube under my name, Richard Aspden. I understand that having brand accounts, and having a name on different platforms makes it easier for people to find you, hence having stuff under the Expedition Fiction name and under my own. My problem as I feel like I’m splitting myself when posting to one account over the other. Plus, there’s times when I wonder whether to post something to one account or the other.
However I have other accounts/things that cover both. The Discord is already there to cover both Expedition Fiction and Richard Aspden. My Instagram was started as just Richard Aspden stuff, but I’ve started including Expedition Fiction stuff recently. Thanks to Instagram, the connected Twitter is starting to get that content too. There’s also the active-but-isn’t Patreon I have that also covers both.
What am I thinking of doing?
My current idea, or plan, is to….well…”archive” the Expedition Fiction Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. Leave them up, but have point people to my main accounts (the Richard Aspden ones). The Expedition Fiction site would keep getting posts, and I’d still stream on the Expedition Fiction Twitch account. It’s just the social media that’d get an update.
This’ll allow me to focus on what I’m posting everywhere. Make it easier for everyone to talk to me, and for me to talk with everyone.
I’ve mostly decided to make this decision, but it’s making that step of actually doing it is hard. And scary. I think it’ll be worth it, but taking that actual step is proving daunting.
I’ll keep everyone updated as to what happens. I’ll try to make a decision in the next week.
