This weeks’ interview is with up and coming cosplayer, Moni_Cosplay!
Who are you?
My name is Monique but I go by MoMo. I’ll be 49 on August 10. I live in San Antonio, married for 21 years with 8 children, all grown now.
How did you come up with your cosplay name moni_cosplay?
Just the first half of my name. I went through so many that were already taken and I was getting aggravated so I just chose that one.
You’re quite new to cosplay. Can you tell us more about how you got into it?
I have my younger brother that does cosplay, cx.cosplay and his wife paradoxcosplay that got me to do Chun Li in Austin. I actually just went to be their photographer, but they brought the costume and everything. I’d gone before just to take photos of them but they told me I had to participate this time. I was so nervous and I kept asking them if it looked okay. I felt so far out of my element, but I had a lot of fun. My second cosplay I was ready to put my all into it.
Favourite cosplay you’ve done so far?
I’ve only done two so far, but Storm is my favorite. She is sexy, fierce, and she controls the weather. How great is that?
Any advice for beginner cosplayers, or people wanting to get into cosplaying?
My advice? Just do it. Find a character that you love, research it and absorb it. The more comfortable you get with the character, the easier it is for you switch into that mode when you go to different events.
Are there any projects you’re working on that you want to share with us?
My sister in law is helping me with Queen Romonda from Black Panther. I think she’s so regal and statuesque. Her very presence commands attention.
You got a shout-out from Dominique Skye on her Instagram. How did that come about?
I met Dominique Skye when I went to Austin. Not only are all her cosplays on point but she is absolutely beautiful with an equally beautiful personality to go along with it. Plus I think I found my tequila sister in her!
Will there be a Moni/Dominique collab in the future?
I would love to!!! Maybe a good and evil Wonder Woman….

Any group cosplays you’d want to do (eg Mystery Inc, Sailor Scouts, Avengers, X-Men, etc)?
Of course I would love to do X-Men, Thor, Avengers…
Which cosplayer would you love to work with?
There are soooo many talented cosplayers out here! Dominique Skye of course, hellspawned_cosplay to name a couple.
What’s the last thing you’ve binged-watched?
Good Girls was the last thing I binge watched and Handmaiden’s Tale. Yes, I know two completely opposite sides of the spectrum! But in my view really good shows.
Are there any cosplayers you think deserve more attention/coverage?
I’ll have to shout out cx.cosplay for this one. He’s done so much in a relatively short amount of time and he’s awesome!! Not just saying that because he’s my brother but he researches his character and pours his soul into it. He becomes the character he portrays.
